Relevant Information:

This is a less common species of Clupisoma opposed to C. prateri. This species was described as Platytropius sinensis. It has been variously assigned to Laides (e.g. Rainboth 1996) and Clupisoma (e.g. Ng 1999) before recent studies have confirmed its status as a species of Clupisoma (see Ng 1999 and Chen et al. 2005). This species is known throughout the Mekong River drainage from southern China (Yunnan) to Viet Nam. It has also been recorded from the Malay Peninsula (Pahang River; Zakaria-Ismail 1992). Habitat: This species inhabits slower-flowing stretches of the main channels of rivers and larger streams, it is migratory, and is considered highly vulnerable to impacts from mainstream dams. Etymology: The genus name Clupisoma: clupea, herring; soma, body, referring to the herring-shaped body. The specific name sinense: –ensis, suffix denoting place: Sinica (China), presumably referring to the only country where it was known to occur at the time (also occurs in Cambodia). Remarks: Formerly in the Schilbeidae family.
