The red sea catfish, also called
the long-barbeled sea catfish, is a species of sea
catfish in the family Ariidae. It was described by
Franz Steindachner in 1876, originally under the genus
Aelurichthys. Description:
Body robust, rounded anteriorly and compressed posteriorly;
mouth sub-terminal and wide; teeth villiform, arranged
in a narrow band followed by four narrow continuous
bands across the palate; two pairs of barbels, the
maxillary barbels long and ribbon-like; dorsal and
pectoral fin spines long. Habitat:
Common in coastal seas and estuaries. Marine; freshwater;
brackish; demersal. Tropical; 32°N - 3°S,
114°W - 77°W. Colouration:
Steel blue to nearly black on back, silvery white
with a pink cast on sides and white on belly; fins
generally pale. Etymology: The specific
name pinnimaculatus: pinnis, fin; maculatus,
spotted, referring to oval blackish spot on anal,
ventral and caudal fins.
North,
Central and South America: Gulf of California
to northern Peru. Type locality:
Panama, Altata, Westküste von CostaRica.
