There are only two described
species in the genera (2020) the other one being Amaralia
oviraptor Friel & Carvalho, 2016 which is
found in the Paraná-Paraguay-system wheras
A. hypsiura is found further north. The two
species are nearly identical. The Amaralia
genus have a slender 2 rayed dorsal fin. Therealso appears to be an undescribed species
from Venezuela. Aquarium Care: Prefers
a secluded tank with non- aggressive tank mates. Diet:
Small invertebrates and tubifex. Tablet foods are
also taken. In their natural habitat Amaralia
feed almost exclusively on eggs and freshly hatched
young fish with a large yolk sac of other fish species.
Etymology: The genus name Amaralia:
-ia, belonging to: herpetologist (and anti-venom serum
expert) Afrânio do Amaral (1894-1982), in honour
of his work in Brazilian natural history. The specific
name hypsiura: hypselos, high or tall; oura,
tailed, referring to the thick (or high) caudal peduncle.
