This genus was previously placed in its own family of Ageneiosidae and you can still find some publications that still follow this line. Habitat: Ageneiosus militaris lives in rivers, eating fish and microcrustaceans. In the Paraná River one finds it in spring, summer and early fall. Reproduction: They do not have parental care and fertilization is internal. In the breeding season males have ossified chins, modifications in the spine of the dorsal fin and previous anal fin rays form the gonopodium. (Da Graça and) Pavanelli, 2007). Etymology: The genus name Ageneiosus: beardless, pertaining to the very small maxillary barbels. The specific name militaris: Soldier or war-like, presumably referring to the long dorsal spine, serrated on both sides.
