Glanidium are close
to Tatia. Description: The
anterior borders of the pectoral spines are generally
smooth and the head is granular. Pectorals with one
spine and 5 or 6 rays, predorsal length 3.2 to 3.7
times in standard length. There are seven species
in this genera and there is not a lot of information
on them, but their aquarium care would be as par the
similar looking Tatia species from this family.
The seven species described so far are Glanidium
albescens, G. bockmanni, G. catharinensis, G. cesarpintoi,
G. leopardum, G. melanopterum and G. ribeiroi.
Their sizes range from 5cm for G. bockmanni
to 15cm for G. melanopterum. Distribution
is Eastern South America. Reamarks:
The images were taken at Pier Aquatics, Wigan, England
and could be an undescribed species. Etymology:
The genus name Glanidium: diminutive of glanis,
sheatfish (Silurus glanis), used as a general term
for catfish, referring to small size (“statura
parva”) of G. albescens (described
at 4.75 unciae, or 11.7 cm).
