Discription:
Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total):
7 - 7; Anal spines: 4; Anal soft rays: 8. Body depth
at anus 19.2-20.5% SL; snout length 41-44.6% HL; interorbital
distance 22.2-25.8 % HL. Colouration:
With a dark brown oblique predorsal bar; distal 4/5
of the dorsal fin dark brown with a narrow hyaline
distal margin. Habitat: Batasio
species generally are found in fast-flowing hillstreams.
Southeast Asian Batasio will tolerate slightly
warmer waters than their Indian counterparts. Aquarium
Care: It appears that all Batasio
need a lot of current and a high oxygen content. Etymology:
The genus name Batasio:
from the local (Bengali) name of the fish (batasio
or batashi). The
specific name dayi: in memory
of Francis Day (1830-1889), Inspector-General of Fisheries
in India and author of “Fishes of India”
(1889), an “illustrious naturalist” (translation),
for his many valuable contributions to the ichthyology
of India.
