Description:
Can be identified by the long adipose fin and the
scattered spots. Dorsal spines (total): 2; Dorsal
soft rays (total): 7; Anal soft rays: 10 - 13. Smooth
head, covered by thin membrane. The maxillary barbel
could reach pelvic fin. Well developed adipose fin,
about 3 times the length of the dorsal fin, starting
from near the back of the dorsal fin. Body nude without
scale. Complete lateral line from the head till the
caudal fin. Habitat: Adults inhabit
large rivers, with current. Colouration:
Light brownish in colour, white in stomach. Body with
a few scattered black spots. Reproduction:
Oviparous, distinct pairing possibly like other members
of the same family. Etymology: The
genus name Hemibagrus:
Hemi- half; bagrus- from 'bagre',
a South American name for a catfish, but is only used
for African and Asian species. The
specific name guttatus: spotted,
(with drop-shaped spots).
