Description:
Dorsal spines (total): 2; Dorsal soft rays (total):
6 - 7; Anal soft rays: 21 - 24. High dorsal fin, starts
at above the point between pectoral and pelvic fins.
Colouration: Light coloured in stomach,
without any spots. Edges of all fins are black.
Etymology: The genus name of Tachysurus:
tachys, swift; oura, tail, referring to the presumed
agility of T. sinensis based on its “long
and nimble” tail (translation). The specific
name of vachellii:
in honour of Rev. George Harvey Vachell (1799-1839),
who “presented” type.
Remarks:
Still valid in some publications and in some online
rescources as Pseudobagrus
vachelliibut Eschmeyer's
Catalog of Fishes has Tachysurus as the current
genus name with Pseudobagrus vachellii as
a junior synonym.
