CW141 has now been described
by Tencatt et al. (2022) as Aspidoras aldebaran.
Lineage: All
Aspidoras belong to Lineage 2
and when there is a revision they will stay as Aspidoras
von Ihering, 1907 with the type species of A.
rochai Ihering, 1907. As
of the latest update (Dias
et al 2024), Aspidoras
aldebaran has been placed in Lineage
2 and has retained the genus name of Aspidoras.
Aquarium Care:
Best kept in groups of six or more and are best
housed with small fishes that are not aggressive.
Although no plants occur in their habitat you can
still provide a planted area in the tank for cover
and include a soft substrate such as sand or small
rounded gravel with coral sand added if in a soft
water area. Diet:Flake,
tablet foods, small live and frozen foods. Etymology:
The epithet “aldebaran” refers to the
red giant Aldebaran or Alpha Tauri (a Tauri), the
brightest star of the Taurus constellation, deriving
from the Arabic al Dabaran, which means “the
follower”. The star presents a bright orange
glow and it is positioned at the left eye of the mythological
bull. The name alludes to the fact that Aspidoras
aldebaran was firstly found among Aspidoras
taurus type series, being promptly recognised
as a different and new species by its peculiar morphology
and colour pattern. A noun in apposition (Tencatt
et al.). Remarks:
As explained by Tencatt, Evers (2016:20), the C- and
CW-number coding system was implemented by the fishkeeping
hobby for putative new species to avoid the creation
of nomina
nuda in taxonomy. The species
coded as CW141 is said to be from the same area as
A. aldebaran, the Rio Araguaia basin at Alto
Araguaia, Mato Grosso, and strikingly resembles the
new species. Therefore, considering the clear compatibility
between locality data and general morphology and colour
pattern, we attribute CW141 to A. aldebaran,
(Tencatt et al.).
