Information:
The fish in the first first
5 images were collected by the image contributor Carlos
Bishop in the Corrientes province of N.E. Argentina
near the Paraguayan border. They were caught in densely
planted areas with a gravel bottom, the water was
quite limpid and they are always living alongside
C.
aeneusand
C.
paleatus. In
the winter the water temperature gets down to
between 10 to11ºC (47-49ºf) and even as
low as 7 to 8ºC (39-43ºf). Seemingly wild
hybrids with C. aeneus are very common. There
is a similar looking species from the Mato Grosso
in Brazil which has been given the C-number code of
C088.
Lineage: Part of the so called "Elegans
Group" which would place it in Lineage 5 and
a revision in the future could involve the resurrection
of the genus name Gastrodermus (Cope, 1878).
As of
the latest update Corydoras undulatus has
now been placed in Lineage 5 and has the new genus
name of Gastrodermus (2024).
Aquarium Care: This is akin to most
of this genus, very peaceful, and would be best housed
with small to medium tank mates such as Tetras, Rasboras
and Danios or in a species tank for breeding purposes.
Diet: A good quality flake food and
tablet food for adults with sporadic feedings of frozen
or live food will keep your Corydoras/Gastrodermus
in good health. Etymology: The specific
name undulatus: wavy, referring to “dark
purplish spots tending to run together, forming undulating
longitudinal bands”. Remarks:
Lower temperatures in the aquarium will be beneficial
to this species. CW022 has now been redescribed as
being a colour form of G. undulatus (Bono
A. et al. 2019). Still
found on some online sources as Corydoras undulatus.
