Description:
Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total):
6; Anal soft rays: 14 - 17. Distal portion of the
upper labial extension distinctly elongated, forming
acute tip which sometimes appears as an enlarged terminal
fimbriae. Aquarium Care: Provide
a sandy substrate as it likes to dig looking for morsels.
Diet: Tablet, pellet foods and also frozen
foods such as bloodworm. Remarks:
The first three thumbnail images depict a very similar
looking species which is reported to be from the Rio
Nanay in Peru which flows through Iquitos. This species
along with another from the Amazonas have been termed
as 'Nanay Form' and 'Amazon Form'. This excludes the
true species which is from the Rio Negro.There are differences in Variation in oral-hood
morphology in all three species. Three groups were
parsed: (Sabaj, 2005) L. cataniai sensu stricto
(Rio Negro and Casiquiare canal), L. cf.
cataniai Amazon form (Amazonas basin excluding
Nanay and Negro) and L. cf. cataniai
Nanay form (specimens largely from Río Nanay,
Peru).
