There are at present (2018)10
species in this poorly known genera. Habitat:
Chasmocranus quadrizonatus occurs in the Amazon
river basin in Peru (Ortega et al. 2012). Its type
locality, and the only locality at which it has been
collected, is Tingo de Pauca, in the Marañon
River, Peru (Pearson 1937). However, it may also occur
downriver from this site. Tropical benthopelagic freshwater
fish. It occurs in white waters with sandy grounds
or gravel. It does not migrate. Remarks:
This species was captured further south in the Rio
Madre de Dios region by the image contributor (first
three thumbnails: Allan James) in Peru April 2017.
This species is listed as Data Deficient in the IUCN
Red List of Threatened Species because of a lack of
information on its exact range, population status,
and the threats that are affecting it.
