Description:
According to Bockmann and Miquelarena (2008), Rhamdella
was proposed by Eigenmann and Eigenmann (1888) as
a subgenus of Rhamdia Bleeker, 1858, from
which it was distinguished by having a cranial fontanelle
extending to the base of the supraoccipital, as opposed
to not having this fontanel continue behind the eye
(Eigenmann and Eigenmann 1888). Habitat:
Rhamdella eriarcha is distributed in the
Jacuí river basin, a tributary of the Patos
lagoon system, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (Bockmann
and Guazzelli 2003). Etymology: The
genus name of Ramdella: –ella, a diminutive,
proposed as a subgenus of Rhamdia. The specific
name of eriarcha:
meaning eri-, very; architis, anus, referring to the
long anal fin. Remarks:
Rhamdella eriarcha is endemic to Brazil,
occurring in the Patos lagoon system. The species
is widely distributed, frequent and abundant. As no
significant threats were detected that put its population
at risk, Rhamdella eriarcha was categorised
as Least Concern (LC) (IUCN 2022).
