Cordylancistrus has
historically been the bin into which ichthyologists
placed all 'Chaetostoma-like' loricariids that had
fully-plated snouts but lacked the distinctive attributes
of either Dolichancistrus (long pectoral-fin
spines, at least one highly elongate cheek odontode)
or Leptoancistrus (adipose and anal fins
missing, at least one highly elongate cheek odontode)
(Lujan, Nathan 2019). Habitat:
This species is endemic to Colombia and is present
in the Dagua River and Upper Cauca basins. In Valle
del Cauca, it has been reported from the rivers San
Cipriano, Agua Clara and Anchicayá (Maldonado-Ocampo
et al. 2005). It also occurs in Rio San Juan. In Antioquia,
it has been reported from Alto Río Nechí.
Its type locality is Caldas (Eigenmann 1912). Etymology:
The genus name Cordylancistrus: From the
'Kordyle' = Club, swelling + (Greek) agkistron = hook,
referring to its wide head. The specific name daguae:
of the Dagua River basin, Colombia, where it is endemic.
Remarks:
Cordylancistrus daguae has a wide range;
it occurs in several rivers. Although the population
is affected by several threats, especially water pollution
related to urban waste and mining, it seems to be
relatively abundant where it occurs in Río
Dagua. However, it is not known whether there have
been population declines in other parts of its range.
The species is listed as Least Concern, but a re-assessment
should be performed once further population data are
available (IUCN 2016).
