Description:
The Delturus genera are flat headed and are
a medium sized species.
Strongly developed ridge anterior to the adipose fin.
Dorsal fin with 8-10 branched rays. The teeth are
bicuspid with two almost identical shaped cusps. Habitat:
Specimens that were recently collected were found
in wide sectors of the river channels, with strong
currents and a rocky bottom.
Aquarium Care: No problems in the aquarium
but they do need a current in the water. Provide
plenty of hiding places for this species. Diet:
Omnivore. Vegetable foods such as cucumber, spinach
and other various foods such as tablet, flake and
frozen. Will do better with a high vegetable content
in their diet. Etymology: The genus
name Delturus: Delta, fourth letter of Greek
alphabet; oura, tail, referring to tail, flat above,
trenchant below, -shaped
in cross section. The specific name carinotus:
keeled, referring to five azygous plates between dorsal
and adipose fins, which rise to form a keel. Remarks:
Delturus carinotus occurs in the Doce River
basin, in the state of Minas Gerais. It is widely
distributed, frequent and abundant. As no significant
threats were identified that put its population at
risk, Delturus carinotus was categorised
as Least Concern (LC), (IUCN 2018).
