Habitat:
Harttia carvalhoi is a species widely distributed
in the Paraíba do Sul River basin, southeastern
Brazil (Ferraris Jr. 2003). Other records of the species
in the Paraíba do Sul River basin include the
Córrego dos Buenos, Buenos Basin, in the Córrego
Taquaral and in the Córrego Pirutinga, both
in the Guaratinguetá Basins, São Paulo
state (Rondineli et al. 2011); in the Piracuama and
Grande rivers, in the Paraíba do Sul River
Basin (Ingenito and Buckup 2007), in the Grande stream,
a tributary of the left bank of the Paraíba
do Sul River (Centofante et al. 2006), in the Paraibuna,
Ipiranga and Grande rivers, points located in the
Santa Virgínia Nucleus of the Serra do Mar
State Park, in the municipality of São Luís
do Paraitinga, São Paulo (Gomiero and Braga
2006), in the Grande stream microbasin (Braga and
Andrade 2005) and in the Três Pontes stream,
in the Paraibuna River, in the Chapéu d'Uvas
reservoir and close to the dam and at the mouth of
the Tabuões stream, in the state of Minas Gerais
(Oliveira and Lacerda 2004). Aquarium Care:
Not the easiest genera to keep as they will need clean,
oxygen rich water and a strong current. They will
also need reduced temperatures in the aquarium due
to their southern habitats. Does not do well in imports
due to its difficulty in traveling containers. Sexual
Differences: Males tend to have odontodes
(hair like structures) on the first ray of the pectoral
fins and the head in males is broader. Diet:
Grazes on microscopic algae, mostly diatoms and green
algae growing on rugged and light-coloured rocks,
and submersed vegetation. Chironomid and simuliid
larvae, as well as tiny crustaceans, are recorded
in its diet. When scraping algae off the substrate,
the fish makes vigorous mouth movements and jerky
movements, probably related to its mouth making alternate
grazing and attaching to the substrate. In the aquarium
feed dry foods, algae wafers, Spirulina and normal
tablet foods. Frozen foods, Artemia nauplii,
glass worms and Daphnia. Etymology:
The specific name carvalhoi: in honour of
Brazilian ichthyologist-herpetologist Antenor Leitão
de Carvalho (1910–1985), who collected holotype.
Remarks:
Harttia carvalhoi is a species widely distributed
in the Paraíba do Sul river basin, frequent
and abundant. As no significant threats that put its
population at risk have been detected, the species
was listed in the Least Concern (LC) category (IUCN
2018).
