A well defined large spotted
species not unlike L224 which has more spots in all
of its fins. First appeared in the German DATZ magazine
of Nov. 1996 and was captioned as a juvenile version
of L224. Habitat: Hypostomus
hermanni was described from the type-locality
Piracicaba. The species is known from the Piracicaba
River, and the Tietê River basin in the state
of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil. Additionally
the species is herein also recorded in the Paraná
River main channel and three of its left tributaries,
Paranapanema, Ivaí, and Piquiri basin, in the
state of Paraná, Southern Brazil. As specimens
of H. hermanni are mainly found in shallow
to moderate shallow running waters, if Ihering (1911)
referred the type-locality Piracicaba River as the
Piracicaba city, the most probable collecting spot
of the holotype was the Salto de Piracicaba, a single
rocky rapid stretch in the Piracicaba River at Piracicaba
city. Aquarium Care: As with most
of this genus, will do well in a larger aquarium of
6ft (180cm) or over which is well filtered. Water
parameters can be quite diverse for this genera. As
this genus in the main are messy eaters, good water
quality and filtration would need to be adhered to.
Diet: Omnivore with a liking for
green, tablet and frozen foods. Etymology:
Named in honour of Ihering’s father, German-Brazilian
zoologist Hermann von Ihering (1850-1930). Remarks:
Redescribed as Hypostomus
hermanni in July 2021 by Dias AC, Zawadzki CH.
There is also another Hypostomus described
in the same year with the L and LDA numbers of L233
and LDA009, this species is named as H. fuscomaculatus
and is a large spotted species with larger spots to
the head.
