The Hypostomus genus
has 7 soft rays to the dorsal fin whereas the similar
looking Pterygoplichthys species have 10 soft
dorsal fin rays. Description: Mature
males of H. isbrueckeri have white to yellow
seams to the distal margins of the caudal fin.Head covered with dermal ossifications dorsally,
except for a naked area on snouttip, oval
in shape. Dorsal margin of orbit not or very slightly
elevated, continuing in a very inconspicuous ridge
on posttemporal plate. Usually three scutes bordering
posterior margin of supraoccipital; these scutes sometimes
fragmented in four or five small scutelets. Body very
low; dorsal profile gently descending from origin
of dorsal fin to end of caudal peduncle. Caudal peduncle
roughly ovate in cross-section; slightly flattened
ventrally. Dorsal scutes between end of dorsal fin
base and adipose fin spine flat in their dorsal portions;
those closer to dorsal fin sometimes with a central
area unprovided of odontodes. Aquarium Care:
As with most of this genus, will do well in a larger
aquarium, and the aquarium well filtered. Water parameters
can be quite diverse for this genera. Diet:
Omnivore with a liking for green, tablet and frozen
foods. Etymology: The specific name
of isbrueckeri: In honour of the noted Ichthyologist
Dr. Isaäc J. H. Isbrücker.
