Description:
Placed in the Hypostoumus cochliodon species
group which have a shorter body and more high backed
than other members of the Hypostomus. They
have a small number of spatulate teeth with a single
cusp with the jaws arranged in a V shape. The Hypostomus
genus has 7 rays to the dorsal fin whereas the similar
looking Pterygoplichthys species have 10 dorsal
fin rays. Hypostomus pyrineusi is distinguished
from most members of the H. cochliodon group
except some H.
cochliodon,
H. levis, H. ericius, H. oculeus,
and H.
taphorni by having 0 - 10 (usually
0; Fig. 2 B) odontodes on the opercle (vs. 11 or more).
Hypostomus pyrineusi further differs from
H. hemicochliodon and H. sculpodon
by lacking a ridge on the pterotic-supracleithrum,
by the presence of large, spoonshaped teeth (vs. teeth
intermediate; Fig. 1 C vs. B), and a lack of a buccal
papilla; from H. ericius, H. hemicochliodon,
H. oculeus, and H. sculpodon by
lacking strong, sharp keels on the lateral plates;
from H. levis by having an adipose fin; from
H. cochliodon by having the spots more numerous
and close-set on the body (vs. spots absent or widely
spaced); and from H. taphorni by having pigmentation
on the lobes of the caudal fin equally distributed
(vs. lower lobe darker than upper) - Armbruster (2003).
Aquarium Care: As with most of this
genus, will do well in a larger aquarium of 120cm
(4ft) or over with the aquarium well filtered. Water
parameters can be quite diverse for this genera. Peaceful
species that will dig up plants with their constant
burrowing in the substrate so better to put plants
in pots. Diet: Omnivore with a liking
for green, tablet and frozen foods. This species is
also a lover of wood which should be provided for
in the aquarium.
