by having slender viliform bicuspid teeth (vs. robust
spoon-shaped teeth) and by having dentaries angled
to each other more than 90 degrees (vs. dentaries
angled from 80 to 90 degrees); from the remaining
congeners except H. affinis, H. ancistroides,
H. argus, H. aspilogaster, H.
borellii, H. boulengeri, H. carinatus,
H. careopinnatus, H. commersoni,
H. corantijni, H. crassicauda, H.
delimai, H. dlouhyi, H. faveolus,
H. formosae, H. gymnorhynchus, H.
hemiurus, H. hoplonites, H. interruptus,
H. micromaculatus, H. niceforoi,
H. nigrolineatus, H. pantherinus,
H. paucimaculatus, H. piratatu,
H. plecostomus, H. punctatus, H.
pusarum, H. rhantos, H. scabriceps,
H. seminudus, H. tapijara, H.
velhochico and H. watwata, by having
moderate keels along the five lateral series of plates
(vs. lacking keels); from the species above by having
a more slender and elongate body, what can be somewhat
depicted by the anal-fin unbranched ray length longer
than head depth (vs. anal-fin unbranched ray length
shorter than head depth) (Zawadzki
