Description:
Rineloricaria reisi is distinguished from other
species of the genus by the abdomen partially covered
by a set of irregular series small plates, decreasing
in the previous sense and preceding the preanal plate,
not reaching the height of insertion of the pectoral
fins; for the waist area bare shoulder and a set of
small plates located below the gill openings by contacting
abdominal side plates. In addition, the following
combination helps to differentiate it from other species:
the tip of the snout with a bare oval area is not
extending later and pectoral fins reaching the first
third to half of the pelvic fins . Rineloricaria
reisi resembles R.
misionera by the abdomen
partially covered plates, but in this last species
the abdominal series contact plates side abdominal
(which does not occur in R. reisi); differs
from R. maquinensis not present rectangular
plates along the base of the pelvic fins, characteristics
of that species. Reproduction: The
Rineloricaria species are usually cave spawners,
where the female will place their eggs after the male
has cleaned inside. The male will then guard and fan
the eggs until hatching. The eggs will hatch in 4-5
days whereas the male can now be removed. More breeding
information can be found here in the articles breeding
section. Aquarium
Care: As with all Rineloricaria
provide long leaved plants or bamboo stalks for them
to hang on to. Diet: Omnivore. Vegetable
food such as cucumber and other various foods such
as tablet, flake and frozen. Etymology:
The specific name reisi was given in tribute
to Roberto E. Reis, for his contribution to the neotropical
Ichthyology and primarily by his studies of species
of the family Loricariidae. Noun genitive.
