The species was described
from the vicinity of Sukaranda, northern Sumatra (Volz
1904). Silurichthys leucopodus Fowler 1939,
described from Trang in peninsular Thailand, is considered
its junior synonym (Ng and Ng 1998). Habitat:
The species is known from Wampu River drainage in
northern Sumatra, river drainages that drain both
the eastern and western coast of the northern Malay
Peninsula, from the Perak and Besut river drainages
northwards to the Isthmus of Kra, the short coastal
rivers that drain the southern face of hills in southeastern
Thailand and southwestern Cambodia (Ng and Ng 1998),
and Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam (Vasil'eva and Vasil'ev
2012). Its Extent of occurrence (EOO) is estimated
to be 396,170 km2, calculated from a minimum convex
polygon using georeferenced data in Ng and Ng (1998)
and GBIF (2019). Seems to inhabit fast-flowing mountain
streams with a sandy or rocky bottom and can be found
hiding under rocks. Remarks:
Although there is no detailed information on the population
status of this species, survey data indicates that
it is still abundant in many parts of its known distribution
and the population trend is thus suspected to be stable
or declining at a rate that precludes it from a threatened
category. While there may be localised or regional
threats, they are unlikely to affect this species
on a range-wide scale, and it is found within several
protected areas. Therefore, it is assessed as Least
Concern (IUCN 2019).
