Description:
Differs from congeners
in having one pectoral fin ray. Pectoral, dorsal and
anal fin rays unbranched; 31-35 dorsal procurrent
caudal fin rays, 28-32 ventral procurrent caudal fin
rays; 14-19 premaxillary teeth; 13-18 dentary teeth.Etymology: The genus name Listrura:
listron, shovel; ourá, tail, referring to numerous
accessory rays on tail, which make the caudal region
shovel-shaped. The specific name nematopteryx:
nematos, threaded; ptéryx, wing or fin, referring
to its extremely narrow, one-rayed, filamentous pectoral
fin. Remarks:
Occurs in the Estrela River basin, in the municipality
of Magé, state of Rio de Janeiro. The species
is known only from microhabitats formed by unconsolidated
substrate, with running water and vegetation. Recent
collection efforts in the region have not revealed
new subpopulations. The species has been recorded
in only two localities, and its type locality has
been severely decharacterized and this subpopulation
has been considered extinct. Its known area of occupancy
(AOO) was estimated at 4 km2 and the number of localities
is equal to one. Intense urbanization compromises
the quality of the habitat. Thus, Listrura nematopteryx
has been listed as Critically
Endangered (CR), (IUCN 2018).
