Habitat:MarimbondoRiver, tributary of the Preto
River, Paraíba do Sul River basin(Costa
et al. 2022). Diet: Will feed on
most aquarium fare such as tablet, frozen and live
foods. It is an opportunistic predator that mainly
feeds on insects, but also will take small crustaceans
and plant material (algae and remains of phanerogams).
Etymology: The specific name auroguttatus:
aureus (L.), golden; guttatus (L.), spotted, referring
to golden spots (alternating with dark spots) on posterior
half of body, and a row of gold spots on midline of
back, behind dorsal-fin base. Remarks:
Trichomycterus auroguttatus is endemic to
the Paraíba do Sul basin, being rare and not
very abundant. It occurs in an area impacted by urbanisation,
which apparently does not represent a significant
threat that puts its population at risk, being categorised
as Least Concern (LC) (IUCN 2018).
