This is the type species of
the Corydoras genus. This species has also
a third rictal barbel also found in C.
amapaensis,
C.
septentrionalis
and C.
simulatus.Lineage: Placed inLineage
1, and when there is a revision they will stay as
Corydoras (Lacépède, 1803)
with the type species of C. geoffroy La Cépède,
1803. As
of the latest update (Dias
et al 2024), Corydoras
geoffroy has been placed in Lineage
1 and has retained the genus name of Corydoras.
Aquarium Care: As this is one of
the longer snouted species it will be well suited
to most community tanks. A well planted tank with
a soft substrate such as sand so they can bury their
snouts while searching out food. The males can be
somewhat aggressive to each other so would need a
large tank and hiding places to dilute this trait.
Diet: A good quality flake food and
tablet food for adults with sporadic feedings of frozen
or live food will keep your Corydoras in
good health. Etymology: The specific
name geoffroy: In honour of colleague Étienne
Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772–1844), French naturalist,
“who has earned the gratitude of all who cultivate
natural history through his observations of the various
animals of Egypt, particularly the fishes of the Nile”
(translation) [a noun in apposition, without the patronymic
“i”].
