Named because of its similarity
to the lineage 9 speciesHoplisoma
metae, and
coming from the same locality. C. simulatus is
one of only four species that posses a third pair
of rictal barbels, C.
septentrionalis,
C.
geoffroy and
C.
amapaensis are
the other three. These extra barbels are short and
not that easy to see unless the fish is stationary.
There are two different forms in the hobby, one with
black dorsal markings and a plain body and the other
with a black blotch to the body. Similar looking to
C.
cortesi.Sometimes
imported with the exporters name of C."Olga"
(also C. septentrionalis). Lineage:
A "Saddle nosed" species which would place
it in Lineage 1. When there is a revision they will
stay as Corydoras (Lacépède,
1803) with the type species of C. geoffroy
La Cépède, 1803. As
of the latest update (Dias
et al 2024), Corydoras
simulatus has been placed in Lineage
1 and has retained the genus name of Corydoras.
Aquarium Care: As this is one of
the longer snouted species it will be well suited
to most community tanks. A well planted tank with
a soft substrate such as sand so they can bury their
snouts while searching out food. Diet:
Readily accepts a mixed and varied diet which includes
granular foods, tablet food, frozen bloodworm and
a good quality flake.
