Description:
The new species has been long confused with Chaetostoma
milesi,
a species with similar overall morphology and colour
pattern that is restricted to the Magdalena-Cauca
River Basin. We diagnose the new species on the basis
of morphology as well as a precise description of
the colour pattern. Chaetostoma joropo is
also easily distinguished from C. formosae
the most similar species and other species inhabiting
the Orinoco River drainage in Colombia. Data on ontogenetic
variation and sexual dimorphism are provided, as well
as natural history notes and remarks on the usage
of the name Chaetostoma milesi for specimens
from both the Orinoco and Magdalena-Cauca drainages.
A discussion on the usage of the name Chaetostoma
platyrhynchus
is also provided given its current instability in
the literature (Ballen et al.). Habitat:
Chaetostoma joropo is described from the piedmont
of the Orinoco River drainage in Colombia. Aquarium
Care: As C. joropo is a more warm
loving species it will need a good water flow in the
aquarium with a sand substrate and plenty of hiding
places. The Chaetostoma species are not the
easiest to maintain as the mountain stream species
will need a water current to provide oxygen-rich water.
The species that are exported usually originate from
warmer waters so are a bit easier to keep than the
mountain stream variety. Diet: Great
algae eater, but you will have to subsidise this food
with algae wafers and vegetable foods such as cucumber,
zucchini and lettuce. Will also except tablet and
worm foods. Sexual Differences: Males
have better colour, a broader head and lips and adult
males possess longer ventral fins than the females.
Etymology: The specific name joropo
refers to a collection of musical styles in the Llanos,
the Orinoco-basin - because Chaetostoma joropo
lives there.
