Description:
Rineloricaria zaina is distinguished from other
species of the genus by the following combination
of characters: the tip of the snout with a bare area
oval not extending posteriorly; dorsal crests and
head inconspicuous; abdomen completely covered by
5-6 small plates and uniform series, preceded by for
smaller boards and numerous in the waist shoulder
strap; preanal plate; pectoral fins reaching the first
third of the pelvis; pelvic beyond the anal fin origin;
dark range in the posterior margin of the caudal fin.
This species looks like R. jaraguensis by
abdomen covered with plates, but is easily this at
the lowest head size (22.4% vs. 25.9 -26.6 -24.8%
CP); differs from R. thrissoceps (also with
abdomen interorbital distance largely covered) ( -26.6
22.1% vs. 19.8% in CC); R. quadrensis, R.
felipponei, R. steindachneri and R.
henselli differ to R. zaina with the
same characteristics that R. anitae. Rineloricaria
zaina has the shape of the oval head rounded
vs. almost triangular format of R. microlepidogaster;
excluding the length of fins, differentiates this
species for the same features that R. anitae has.
Reproduction: The Rineloricaria
species are usually cave spawners, where the female
will place their eggs after the male has cleaned inside.
The male will then guard and fan the eggs until hatching.
The eggs will hatch in 4-5 days whereas the male can
now be removed. More breeding information can be found
here in the articles breeding
section. Aquarium
Care: As with all Rineloricaria
provide long leaved plants or bamboo stalks for them
to hang on to. Diet: Omnivore. Vegetable
food such as cucumber and other various foods such
as tablet, flake and frozen. Etymology:
Local Brazilian name for the matte black or dark-brown
fur of horses and cattle, referring to the dark-brown
colour of some specimens and the dull, velvety appearance
of their small odontodes. Remarks:
