Zaina
is the name given to black coat or dark brown, with little
gloss given to horses or cattle. The specific name zaina,
an adjective, is used in allusion to the dark brown colour
of various individuals of the species and the aspect matte
and velvety, given the small size of odontodes.

Named
for Cláudio Henrique Zawadzki, professor at Universidade
Estadual de Maringá (UEM), Maringá, Paraná
State, Brazil, in recognition of his dedication and remarkable
contributions to the study of the family Loricariidae.

Referring to the stripes.
zonatum/us
Belted
or girdled, referring to yellow and brown bands on body.
zungaro
Comes from the native
name "Zungaro" which is applied to many large
pimelodids.
zygatus
From
the Greek zygados = 'team' or 'pair', possibly
alluding to the close resemblance to Corydoras rabauti.
